Color:

(Celtis occidentalis)

Hackberry is an interesting, tough, native edible with warty bark that produces prolific berries in fall. Though more often a treat for birds, the fruit is tasty and has been described as nature’s peanut M&M because it features a hard, nutrient packed nut surrounded by a thin layer of sweet flesh similar to figs, which compliment each other perfectly. A common and easy way to prepare a large harvest is to crush or grind the berries and nuts into granola mixture or energy bar. Hackberry is often planted in urban areas because of its tolerance to heat, drought, salt, and poor soils. Given good conditions, they can grow quickly and develop into a large tree.

Flavor profile: Sweet and nutty

Hardiness zone: 3-9

Light: Part shade to full sun

Soil: Highly adaptable to different soil types with a pH of 6.5-8

Mature height: 40’+

Spacing: 25-35’

Pollination: Hackberry trees are self-fertile and an individual tree can produce a full crop.

Planting Tips: Make sure your planting hole has good drainage by digging a large hole and stabbing the bottom and sides with a shovel so water can drain. Fill the hole with native soil to help water disperse evenly. Consistent watering is crucial for newly planted trees to help minimize transplant shock and establish strong roots.
