Orange Ball Buddleja (Bare Root)
(Buddleja globosa)
Unlike most of our other offerings, orange ball buddleja is neither edible nor native, but we grow it for its sheer whimsy and good nectar production for bees and butterflies. These large bushes are native to Chile, but hardy down to zone 6. They are covered in spherical orange flower clusters in early summer and, being a butterfly bush, draw in plenty of pollinators. Importantly, unlike other butterfly bushes in this genus, the orange ball tree does not have the same invasive tendencies owing to its wingless seeds that do not travel like the more common butterfly bushes that spread via wind.
Hardiness zone: 6-9
Light: Full sun to part shade
Soil: Rich, well-drained soil with pH 6-8
Mature size: 10-15’ tall, 8-12’ wide
Spacing: 5-7’ apart in a hedge, or 10-12’ apart for a larger shrub
Planting tips: Choose a south facing or otherwise protected location if growing in zones 6a-7a. Make sure your planting hole has good drainage by digging a large hole and stabbing the bottom and sides with a shovel so water can drain. Fill the hole with native soil to help water disperse evenly. Consistent watering is crucial for newly planted trees to help minimize transplant shock and establish strong roots.
