'Nova' Raspberry (Potted)
(Rubus idaeus)
Nova is a hardy, reliable, summer-bearing raspberry. Vigorous plants are loaded with fruit in mid-summer, ripening over a long period, and often produce a second, smaller crop later in the fall. Prolific red berries are firm, sweet, and delicious!
Flavor Profile: Bright, fruity, sweet, tart
Hardiness zone: 3-8
Light: Full sun to part shade, but more sun will result in more berries
Soil: Adaptable, but prefers rich, prepared soil with pH 5.5-6.5
Mature height: 5-6’
Spacing: 2-3’
Pollination: Self-fertile
Planting tips: Water in well. Mulching heavily is recommended as raspberry shoots will emerge through thick mulch but weeds will be suppressed. Raspberry thickets are difficult to weed once established, so starting with well prepared ground will yield good results for years to come. Plants will try to spread through runners and new shoots, so choose a place that can accommodate expansion, a spot that will limit the spread with a border, or one that can be mowed on all sides.
Growing tips: Nova is a floricane, or summer-bearing raspberry, meaning it produces its main crop on two-year-old shoots. When pruning in the fall, remove all spent second year canes that fruited in the summer, and leave 4-6 first year canes per plant to fruit next season. Occasionally Nova will also produce on 1st year canes and you will get a second, small crop of berries in fall after the main summer crop! In this case, you can prune the 1st year canes below where they fruited in the fall so that they will produce again the following summer.
