Nanking Cherry (Bare Root)
(Prunus tomentosa)
A stunning, decorative cherry bush that produces tasty fruits in abundance! Nanking cherry is a reliable fruiting plant that suffers far less from pesky pests and diseases than many of its cherry relatives. They are also very hardy and less susceptible to crop loss in years with late spring frosts. Plants are fast, adaptable growers and can start producing in only 3 or 4 years. Nanking cherry is as showy as it is edible and these compact bushes are covered in white-pink flowers in spring, followed by an enormous amount of small sweet-tart cherries in early summer. Many enjoy these seasonal fruits raw but they are also excellent for pies and preserves.
Flavor profile: Sweet, tart, juicy, refreshing
Hardiness zone: 2-7
Light: Full sun to very light shade
Soil: Adaptable but prefers well-drained soil with pH 6-7.5
Mature size: 8-12’ tall, 8-12’ wide
Spacing: 5-7’ apart for a denser hedge, or 10-12’ apart for a larger shrub
Pollination: At least 2 nanking cherry plants are required for cross-pollination and fruit production.
Planting tips: Make sure your planting hole has good drainage by digging a large hole and stabbing the bottom and sides with a shovel so water can drain. Fill the hole with native soil to help water disperse evenly. Consistent watering is crucial for newly planted trees to help minimize transplant shock and establish strong roots.
Growing tips: Nanking cherries generally require very little maintenance. As they get older, some pruning to encourage air flow will help the plants stay healthy. If birds are attracted by the bright display of red fruits, nanking bushes can easily be kept small enough that covering with netting is not difficult.
