'Howard' Walnut Seedling (Bare Root)
(Juglans regia)
These are seedlings of the walnut cultivar ‘Howard’, a cold hardy English walnut with large nuts, easy to crack shells, and delayed spring growth which does well at dodging damage from late spring frosts. ‘Howard’ trees are heavy bearers on a more compact tree form than most walnuts. Seedlings of ‘Howard’ should share some of these amazing traits which make it such a reliable producer of quality nuts. Walnuts seedlings generally take 7-10 years to begin bearing.
Flavor profile: Sweet, buttery, butterscotch
Hardiness zone: 5-9
Light: Full sun
Soil: Well-drained soil with pH 6-8
Mature height: 35-40’
Spacing: 25-30’ apart
Pollination: English walnuts are partially self-fertile, but more productive with multiple trees. English walnut trees can also be pollinated by nearby black walnuts!
Planting tips: Make sure your planting hole has good drainage by digging a large hole and stabbing the bottom and sides with a shovel so water can drain. Fill the hole with native soil to help water disperse evenly. Consistent watering is crucial for newly planted trees to help minimize transplant shock and establish strong roots.
Growing tips: Avoid planting in frost pockets as walnuts are sensitive to late spring frosts after breaking dormancy. Foliage will recover after late frosts, but flower buds for nut production can be damaged. Planting on a north facing slope can also help.
We are unable to ship this product outside the contiguous US or to California, Arizona, Kansas, and Texas.
All orders are for Fall 2025 and will be shipped in October-November. Ordering closes November 1st. Live plants will be shipped bare root and dormant.
