Hardy Pecan (Bare Root)
(Carya illinoinensis)
Probably the most recognizable hickory nut, pecans are large, long-lived nut trees native to areas of south-central North America. Nut production is also possible in more northern areas through the breeding of northern, hardy pecans. Our seedlings are grown from the nuts of two known pecan cultivars, Kanza and Stuart, which are both hardy to zone 6. Pecans can take over 10 years to begin producing, but these slow and steady trees will likely produce for 100 years after that! Pecans require lots of space and patience, but reward with some of the most delicious nuts. In more northern areas with a slightly shorter growing season (like ours in northern NJ) Kanza seedlings are recommended as Kanza nuts are quicker to ripen, so nuts grown from this parent are more likely to share this wonderful trait. All of our seedlings are grown in air-prune boxes to maintain an intact, undamaged taproot, which is probably the most significant factor for successfully establishing pecans without severe transplant shock.
Flavor profile: Rich, sweet, buttery
Hardiness zone: 6-9
Light: Full sun
Soil: Rich soil with pH 6-8
Mature height: 70-100’
Spacing: 30-60’ apart
Pollination: Multiple trees required for pollination. Planting 3+ trees is highly recommended. All of our trees are genetically distinct seedlings which should ensure successful cross-pollination.
Planting tips: Plant with great care to not damage the taproot, which is vital to establishment for pecans. Make sure your planting hole has good drainage by digging a large hole and stabbing the bottom and sides with a shovel so water can drain. Fill the hole with native soil to help water disperse evenly. Consistent watering is crucial for newly planted trees to help minimize transplant shock and establish strong roots.
We are unable to ship this product outside the contiguous US or to California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas.
All orders are for Fall 2025 and will be shipped in October-November. Ordering closes November 1st. Live plants will be shipped bare root and dormant.
