Carolina Allspice (Bare Root)
(Calycanthus floridus)
Native to eastern North America, Carolina allspice is an attractive plant with shiny foliage and unique maroon flowers that bloom sporadically through spring. It gets its name from the fragrant bark, which smells like allspice or cinnamon, and when dried and crushed can be used similarly in cooking (seeds and flowers are toxic). Often found in shady woodlands and along streams, it is a very adaptable, low maintenance shrub that can tolerate seasonally wet soil and plenty of shade.
Hardiness zone: 4-9
Light: Full sun to shade, but will flower less in deep shade
Soil: Adaptable but prefers rich, moist soil with pH 6-8
Mature size: 6-10’ tall, 6-10’ wide
Planting tips: Consistent watering is crucial for newly planted trees to help minimize transplant shock and establish strong roots.
We are unable to ship this product outside the contiguous US or to California.
All orders are for Fall 2025 and will be shipped in October-November. Ordering closes November 1st. Live plants will be shipped bare root and dormant.
