American elderberry offers everything you would want in a garden shrub. Fast growing, adaptable, free of pests and diseases, and topping out around 12’ tall, it can be planted just about anywhere with sunshine and thrive. Its enormous berry clusters follow huge white flower umbrellas in the summer, offering enough fruit to be enjoyed by both gardener and wildlife alike. The fruit and flowers are both easy to harvest in large quantities, and once cooked are edible and have many medicinal properties.
Taste Profile (once cooked): Tart, fruity, mildly sweet, slightly earthy
Hardiness zone: 3-9
Light: Full sun-part shade
Soil: Rich, well-drained soil with pH 5.5-6.5
Mature height: 10-12’
Spacing: 4-6’ for a dense hedge
Pollination: Elderberries are partially self-fertile, but having 2+ plants can increase yields. The cuttings we send will be from a mix of at least 2 different plants to ensure genetic diversity.
Planting Tips: Make sure to give hardwood cuttings a fresh cut on the bottom end before planting. The key to rooting hardwood cuttings is a cold top and warm bottom to encourage callousing and root establishment before leaf growth, which can be achieved with a heat mat or utilizing something like a warm compost pile.
