Austree Willow (Bare Root)
(Salix alba x matsudana)
The fastest growing willow, if not the fastest growing tree you will ever plant! Austree willow is an excellent plant for hedges, windbreaks, soil stability, shade, animal fodder, biomass, and so much more. It’s attractive, hardy, and not prone to pest or disease. Although it is extremely vigorous, Austree willow does not sucker or spread by seed, making it very manageable and a wonderful alternative to invasive bamboo. This willow is a fantastic candidate for coppicing, as once established and with adequate moisture, regrowth from the stump can reach as high as 20’ in just 1-2 years. Poles from coppiced willow are excellent to work with in the garden, and they also produce some of the best ramial woodchips available as they are high in nutrients and break down rapidly to feed the soil. Willows do very well in moist sites where other trees may suffer, making Austree a great choice for low lying areas with seasonal pooling or erosion issues.
Hardiness zone: 4-9
Light: Prefers full sun, but can tolerate some shade
Soil: Adaptable but prefers consistently moist to wet soils with pH below 7.5
Mature height: 30-40’
Spacing: Varies by use, can be as close as 8-10” apart for thin, flexible whips for weaving, 3-5’ apart for a dense hedge, or 15-20’ apart for a larger tree.
Planting tips: Willow roots spread far, so it is advised to not plant too close to structures or utility lines. Consistent watering is crucial for newly planted trees to help minimize transplant shock and establish strong roots.
Growing tips: Be sure to maintain adequate moisture for the first year. Coppicing can be done in late winter while the tree is dormant, usually by the second growing season. Cut several inches above the ground and new shoots will sprout in the spring.
We are unable to ship this product outside the contiguous US or to California.
All orders are for Fall 2025 and will be shipped in October-November. Ordering closes November 1st. Live plants will be shipped bare root and dormant.
