American Persimmon (Bare Root)

from $7.50
Size:

(Diospyros virginiana)

American persimmon is a remarkable fruit tree native to eastern North America that produces small, sugary orange fruits which hang onto the tree like ornaments into late fall and early winter. Fruits are edible and delicious, but must be allowed to completely soften to become caramel-like, otherwise they will be extremely astringent! Indigenous peoples cultivated this fruit for likely thousands of years to arrive at the sweet, prolific bearer we know today. Fruit is excellent when processed and included in baked goods. This is a great plant to support local wildlife and rest assured, mature trees will produce plenty enough for anyone who wants some!

Flavor profile: Caramel, sugary, apricot, tangerine

Hardiness zone: 4-9

Light: Full sun

Soil: Well-drained soil with pH 5.5-7

Mature height: 30-60’

Spacing: 15-25’ apart

Pollination: American persimmon seedlings are unsexed, meaning trees could be either male or female. It’s recommended to plant at least 3 or 4 to ensure that there is at least one male and one female in the group for fruit production.

Planting tips: Make sure your planting hole has good drainage by digging a large hole and stabbing the bottom and sides with a shovel so water can drain. Fill the hole with native soil to help water disperse evenly. Consistent watering is crucial for newly planted trees to help minimize transplant shock and establish strong roots.

We are unable to ship this product outside the contiguous US or to California.

All fall 2025 orders are for dormant, bare root plants and will be shipped or available for pick up in October-November. Ordering closes November 1st.
